BT Security Response To Recent Terrorist Events And Government ‘Critical’ Threat Level

(15th June 2017)

As recent events have demonstrated, with the atrocities in Westminster, Manchester and London Bridge, the terrorist threat to the UK is still very real, but the nature of that threat has changed, as has the resilience of the UK to respond in respect of these incidents.

The incidents and raised government threat level were considered by BT Group Security who issued further updates to the BT Workforce following the recent terrorist incidents and the government’s change to the UK threat level. The message from BT’s Kevin Brown was that threat levels in themselves do not require specific responses from the public.

However, vigilance is vital regardless of the current threat level.

If you see individuals acting suspiciously – for example, taking an unusual interest in the security arrangements of our buildings – you should report it immediately, by calling BT's Security Control Centre. If you are traveling, remember to ensure all trips are booked via official channels. This will ensure we can fully support you should an incident occur.

It’s important for you and BT that your emergency contact details and building locations are kept up to date on the HR system.

This means that in the unlikely event of an emergency, BT can make sure there are as few delays as possible when the company needs to contact you, or your family. And please make contact with your line manager as soon as possible should any emergency occur. This will also allow BT to follow the BT Safe and Well policy.

If any employee has information about possible terrorist activity, call the Anti-Terrorist Hotline: 0800 789 321.

The Anti-Terrorist Hotline is for tip-offs and confidential information.

For warnings about possible bombs or other urgent threats, call 999.

This is a time to support one another and be alert.

However, in the unlikely event you find yourself in a situation, you should follow instructions by police or other law enforcement bodies at all times.

The Police are promoting and recommending further advice as follows:-

  • “Run Hide Tell’ video and leaflet, which provides guidance on how to respond to a firearms or weapons attack can be found at the National Police Chiefs Council NPCC Website at:-

  • The ‘CitizenAid’ charity which provides guidance and advice on how the public could save lives during an emergency incident by following some basic steps before the arrival of the Emergency Service. ‘CitizenAid’ is the initiative of four deeply experienced UK civilian and military clinicians working in collaboration with industry to improve public resilience.
